On November 8, 2016, in a major and unexpected upset, Trump was elected President of the United States of America. After an election cycle in which Trump repeatedly praised Russia and Putin, members of the Russian parliament applauded for Trump’s victory. He was inaugurated into office on January 20, 2017. Rick Dearborn served as executive director of Trump’s transition team. The transition team was originally headed by Chris Christie, who was later replaced by Mike Pence.
