Viktor Yanukovych, the ousted former Ukrainian president who is closely aligned with Putin, previously employed Paul Manafort for almost a decade.
His presidential victory in 2010 is often partially attributed to Manafort’s extensive work on his campaign. Yanukovych fled to Russia after his fall from power in 2014. Manafort retroactively disclosed that his company received more than $17 million from the Yanukovych’s Party of Regions, which received financial backing from Rinat Akhmetov. Manafort also allegedly received $12.7 million in off-the-books payments from Yanukovych’s party, the Party of Regions. Yanukovych has been sanctioned by the U.S. and is currently under investigation in Ukraine on charges of corruption and treason. (Photo credit: Dmitry Azarov / Kommersant Photo via Getty Images)
