Sam Clovis is a former Trump campaign adviser who reportedly recruited and vetted Carter Page.
Clovis has refused to confirm allegation that he vetted Page for the campaign by running a Google search on him. Clovis is a former Air Force pilot with a doctorate in public administration who unsuccessfully ran for Senate In Iowa in 2014. He previously hosted a conservative talk show and ran a blog, both of which he used as platforms to voice homophobic and racist views (including his support for the birther movement.) The Washington Post reported that Clovis worked on Russia-related issues at the Pentagon in the 1980s, and that he questioned the effectiveness of Russian sanctions during his unsuccessful run for Senate. During the campaign, Clovis cautioned against George Papadopoulos’ attempts to arrange meetings with Russian officials. Trump nominated Clovis to be the Chief Scientist in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and he currently serves as the White House liaison to the U.S.D.A., despite the fact that he has expressed skepticism over climate change and lacks scientific or agricultural work experience.
