Veselnitskaya, who formerly worked in the Prosecutor’s Office for the regional government of Moscow, has strong ties to Russian oligarchs and government officials; according to the music producer Rob Goldstone, who set up the June 9 meeting, Veselnitskaya was attending on behalf of the Russian government to provide the Trump campaign with damaging information on Hillary Clinton. Veselnitskaya has denied this, claiming that she attended the meeting as part of a lobbying campaign against the sanctions bill known as the Magnitsky Act, during which she also met with Congressman Dana Rohrabacher and helped schedule a screening of an anti-Magnitsky documentary as part of her lobbying against the sanctions. A document obtained by Foreign Policy, purportedly a memo Veselnitskaya brought to the Trump Tower meeting, seems to corroborate both claims, presenting a case against the Magnitsky Act while also providing damaging information about Clinton. According to The New York Times, she also met with the Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika to discuss talking points prior to attending the June 9 meeting. Veselnitskaya also represented Denis Katsyv, the owner of Prevezon Holdings, a company that the Justice Department investigated for allegedly laundering money related to the Magnitsky case. The case against Prevezon was suddenly and mysteriously settled after Trump came into office.
