Jeff Sessions
Jeff Sessions was the first senator to endorse Trump and served as the head of his foreign policy advisory team before being nominated by Trump to be Attorney General.
During the 2016 election, Sessions met at least three times with the Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. During his confirmation hearings, Sessions initially not only said he “was not aware” of any communications between the Trump campaign and representatives of the Russian government but also said on two separate occasions that he personally had not met with any Russian government officials while a member of the Trump campaign. When reports emerged that Sessions had, in fact, discussed campaign-related issues with Kislyak, Sessions recused himself from the Justice Department’s investigation. Trump has repeatedly complained about Sessions’ recusal and told The New York Times that he would not have appointed Sessions had he known Sessions would have to recuse himself from the case.
