Representative Devin Nunes is the chairman of the House Select Committee on Intelligence.
Despite having served on Trump’s transition team, Nunes leads the House’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. Nunes has repeatedly run interference for the Trump administration, diverting government resources into various campaigns of distraction and obfuscation, including attempts to reframe the probe around leaks, debunked conspiracy theories, Obama-era surveillance, and the FBI’s handling of the Steele dossier. One such attempt, in which Nunes coordinated with the White House to allege that Obama administration officials had unlawfully “unmasked” Trump campaign officials caught up in routine foreign surveillance, led to an ethics investigation into Nunes’ handling of classified information during which Nunes nominally recused himself from, but remained involved in, the Russia probe. He was cleared in December 2017, resumed his role on the committee, and promptly started the “#releasethememo” campaign in an apparent effort to discredit the FBI.
