On June 16, 2015, Donald Trump announced his candidacy for president. His campaign initially only included a small number of staffers, many of whom were his family members. Roger Stone, a longtime Republican Party operative, was also initially on the campaign. Trump became the official Republican nominee on July 19, 2016, and named Mike Pence his running mate.
On November 8, 2016, in a major and unexpected upset, Trump was elected President of the United States of America. After an election cycle in which Trump repeatedly praised Russia and Putin, members of the Russian parliament applauded for Trump’s victory. He was inaugurated into office on January 20, 2017.
